Domestic Violence and Domestic Abuse

Violent crimes that occur in the home are described as instances of "domestic violence" or "domestic abuse". Although these crimes usually involve physical attacks by a man on a woman, they can involve attacks on partners and spouses of any gender, aged family members or house mates and children. The abuse can be of a physical, a verbal and a non verbal nature.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority may award compensation payment to victims of domestic violence as it can to any person who has been "the blameless victim of a violent crime" that has resulted in physical or mental injury.
